The technical ability of a recreation professional is what defines them. Here are a few example of how my technical abilities helped to shape who I am, and what my goals are as a recreation professional.
Having the technical abilities to manage in the back country and having certifications to teach it and perform well are what will provide jobs and bring opportunities to a professional. Proficiency in an area shows that you know what you are doing, you
the knowledge to teach others how to do it, and it is like second nature to you. Proficiency in an area such as a ropes course is one of the most important areas of expertise because of how common they are in the outdoor industry. Experience based competency is important as well because it shows that you have done something enough, and had enough practice that you can lead trips and manage people with knowledge on how to do so effectively and safely. Certifications tie all the technical abilities together. Having certifications provide written proof to customers and employers that an individual is qualified to teach you in a specific area.
To further my education and enhance my appeal to employers I have many more certifications that i would like to complete before, if not soon after graduation. I am currently working towards my Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification so that I am more qualified to work in aquatics. Along with my AFO, I intend to get the Lifeguard Instructor certification in order to be able to train staff at aquatic facilities. These certification in addition to my current Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certifications will help to make me very competitive in the aquatic field. Along with those certifications, I hope to become certified as a Wilderness First Responder, as well as become certified through the International Mountain Bike Association. These certifications will help to make me a well rounded recreation professional.
