The first ever Athens Mountain Bike Festival was a very unique experience for me. The weekend was going well, just another enjoyable weekend in the woods, with good people, on bikes. But, that did not last for too long. While on this ride I had to put my first aid, and lifeguarding skills to test. While on one of the group rides, an individual fell after the group had practiced a feature on the trail. He rode the feature, did it well, and rode away fine, until a few feet down the trail, where he lost control somehow, and crashed. This fall caused him to go unconscious. While this was rather terrifying and a stressful situation, I was able to handle the situation properly with one of the ride leaders. After he regained consciousness, he was still rather disoriented, but did not seem to have any life threatening circumstances. After learning as much as we could, and he was up walking, we were able to hike him out of the woods to the ambulance that I had called for him. This experience helped me to realize that I can handle these situations, and while I am certified to help in these situations. It helped me realize how serious the risk of these activities is, and also helped me to realize that further education could beneficial for me. In the summer I plan to get my Wilderness First Responder certification, and this is because of this situation. Stressful situations are what help you to realize if I am cut out for the work I want to do or not, and I learned a lot about myself during this experience.
